Estepona has an authentic atmosphere of the Andalusian city. It has got white houses and balconies decorated with flowers. Houses have to be white, and the bars on the gates, doors and windows have to be black. Windows and doors are painted every year to keep the character of the building.
In the old city you will still meet local residents of these houses, gossiping outside their houses. Streets are narrow and paved with stones. There is a promenade which was renovated a few years ago and at this moment it is a beautiful creation of the city. It is lined with palm trees and flowers. Along the boardwalk you will also find places called chiringuitos (beach bars, open 24 hours).
It is worth going to the fish market, because Estepona has the largest fishing fleet to the west of Malaga. The daily ritual of sale of fish by fishermen returning from fishing at night is also worth seeing in the morning. But you must get up very early in the morning, around 6.00, because at 7.00 everything is over.
An official month of bullfighting takes place on the square in May in Estepona. It is organised on a modern arena which resembles a Henry Moore sculpture.
From Estepona you can go to the town of Ronda, the birthplace of Spanish bullfighting (corrida). In early July Fiesta y Feria takes place. During the ceremony which lasts for a week, the whole families dressed in costumes of Flamenco come out on the streets.
