Some words about the past of Dolores
The official beginning of the town was dated in XVIII centuries. In this time cardinal Luis Antonio Moncada Belluga took care of settling this region. Until 1707 Dolores was one of the Orihuela district. In 1729 Dolores was separated from the Orihuela and became the independent town. The city rights have been granted by Philip V in 1734.
Dolores – the name genesis
The name of the town came from the patron – Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows). In the past the names of the cities were given by the Names of Saints or names correspond to Christian religion. Cardinal Belluga named the cities across the Segura river with names such as: San Felipe Neri, San Fulgencio or Dolores.

Cuisine in Dolores
Dolores is famous with three dishes: arroz con costra, arroz con conejo and cocido con Pelotas. The first one is from Orihuela. This is rice with cover received during frying. The rice is gave with a sausage, eggs, tomatoes and with spices: saffron and garlic. The dish is prepared in traditional way in the clay pot on fire. The second dish (arroz con conejo) is rice with rabbit and artichokes, tomatoes, onions, saffron, garlic and olive oil. The third one is delicious dish which takes a lot of time to prepare. The main ingredients are potatoes, chickpeas, meat (chicken or beef), eggs, sausages and pork blood to keep meatballs in one piece.
Dolores – town development
The population is still growing. In 1900 were 2242 inhabitants. In 1960 the population had 6017 people, because of touristic flow. In 2008 were 7313 inhabitants from which 1257 people were foreigners who bought a house for permanent life in Spain. Half of foreigners were from United Kingdom and a half from Marocco. Nowadays the population is growing but not so fast as couple years ago. Fast growing of population in the end of XX centuries was caused by buyers such as poets, artists and intellectuals. Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores
The church Nuestra Señora de los Dolores is located on the Cardenal Belluga square. It was built in XVIII century. The original architecture has survived to nowadays. The building has the main aisle, the transept and the side chapels. The church has two impressive towers. Inside you can admire the richness of decorations. The interior is in rococo style with gold – plated elements.
In the church you can admire the St. Antonio of Padua altar, the Virgen del Rosario painting with 2 meters high and the image of St. Andrew. The most important monument in the church is the sculpture of Our Lady of Sorrows which is located near to the main altar. This sculpture was made from 1743 to 1745 by Francisco Salzillo sculptor. The other interesting is the sculpture of San Pascal Bailon made in 1786 by Roque López sculptor.
Museo de la Huerta
In Dolores is the Municipal Museum, where you can see the historical and ethnic heritage of ancestors from this region. In the museum are the creations of their culture and evidence of community formations such as ceramics, tools, utensils documents and everyday items. Interesting and creative exhibitions will allow you to travel to the old days and discover the ancient life. The museum is open on Saturdays from 10.30 to 13.30.
