In older times Settlements in Spain were built a short distance from the coastline to avoid any damage caused by Mediterranean pirates. Nowadays though, towns which had originally built their historical center inland also have their seaside quarter. Those seaside towns are frequented by tourists and often have more inhabitants than the primary town areas.

Aguas de Busot is not a typical town though. It is a Municipality town. Small and quiet. Aguas de Busot has two main attractions, the first being curative water properties. Springs are hidden in nearby pine forest. The second attraction is an abandoned hospital where people ill with tuberculosis were treated in XIX century. The hospitals legend attracts enthusiasts of paranormal phenomena every year. This is also a popular destination to buy real estate in Spain.

Before we start speaking about abandoned hospital and other curious places in Aguas de Busot, we should focus on the location of the town. Although a little out of the way it is not difficult to find this town. The AP - /E – 15 crosses more than 1000 kilometers of Mediterranean Seaside.

The town is situated around 6,5 kilometers from seashore but to get to the nearest resort you must travel a few extra kilometers.
For example the seaport located in El Campello is one of the most popular seaport on the Costa Blanca. It is about 10 kilometers away from Aguas de Busot. Surrounding this town is also another famous resort called Benidorm, which is located about 40 kilometers away.

Aguas de Busot is close to Alicante city centre, it can be reached in less than 25 kilometers. Benidorm and Alicante are located at the same distance in a straight line but Aguas de Busot has no convienient connection with highway AP – 7 and other cities. This town has succeeded in maintaining its individual character and a lot of uncovered mysteries.

Hounted house in Aguas de Busot?

To arrive at Aguas de Busot, from Alicante or the North of Spain, it is necessary to get on the highway AP – 7 or N – 332 road. If we travel to town from the North side of Spain, we must get to Benidorm then take N – 332 road. In La Villa Joiosa we have to turn to CV – 770 route on roundabout. This route goes to Orxeta, between this city and impounding reservoir Embalase de Amadorio you need to turn left towards Aguas de Busot.
Traveling from the South of Spain we can choose between two routes. From Alicante we take A – 70 towards highway AP – 7/E – 15 and take the exit towards CV – 775 road. This road takes you directly to Aguas de Busot.

History of Aguas de Busot

Although the source of this place is recorded more than thousand years ago. The town joined the Crown of Castile (Corona de Castilla) in 1296, this is described in the annals. This land according to Treaty of Almizra became the border area between Kingdom of Castile and Aragon. The town was joined into the Valencia region. Due to geopolitical situations Aguas de Busot had to take charge of the border town which was needed to create a point of defense. That point was a castle which was built around the fourteenth century. It had a few towers and thick walls which was typical for buildings placed on highland. Today though only the tower is visible as it was built on a square based.

This house is haunted

Betwen 1252 and 1841 Aguas de Busot was attached to the municipality of Alicante. During the War of Succession, Felipe V granted the municipal rights for its ascription to the Bourbon cause. In that time Countess of Torrellano requested to build a hot springs spa, which would draw water on curative springs. The building became a hospital after that.

Until 1916 the town was named Aigües (Aguas) which comes from the curatives groundwater. The suffix “de Busot” was added to the official name in XX century to distinguish it from other cities. Busot is in fact the nearbly town. Aguas never depended in any administrative way from Busot. Nowadays four forms of the name of the town coexist together: Aguas, Aguas de Busot, Aigües and Aigües de Busot.

Is the hospital haunted?

As we mentioned before, in XIX century arose a spa El Preventorio de Aigües de Busot. At the beginning it was a place where rich citizens came to benefit their health conditions – it was thought that the water had a beneficial influence to the body. At the beginning of XX century the spa was transformed into a hospital where children with tuberculosis were treated. The name of the Hospital implies that treatment prevented spread of infections.

TOWN-AGUAS-BUSOT-NEAR-ALICANTE

To prevent spread of infection families could not visit their children. The quarantine was bad for childrens psyche, which caused suicides by jumping from the highest floors of the building. It is said that this is the reason why the hospital was closed shortly after. People disappeared day by day from hospitals as did medical equipment and supplies. It is true that in 1967 the hospital closed and the disease disappeared.

The building was bought by Valentino Botelle in 2006. This businessman is going to build Hotel & SPA of the highest standards. It should be a five star hotel with an impressive number of 120 of apartments, swimming pools, fitness center, sports areas and many other attractions. It is supposed to be a great place to spend your holiday and also to buy a property on Costa Blanca in Spain.

Aguas de Busot town in the surrounding of Alicante

The hospital is associated with the legend which is alive and popular with people who are interested in paranormal phenomena. The legend says that a white lady who sobs and laughs passes through the abandoned hospital. According to locals it is said that the ghost haunting this place belongs to the wife of the former owner.

Nowadays the town is more focused on its economy, which is primarily based on services. Most businesses from Aguas de Busot are focused on catering, entertainment and tourism. Tourism has become a very profitable business in the last decade. Thius is a great place to invest in Spanish property.
